PiYo Review – My Results and Why I Didn’t Like It.

Hi there! My name is Tara S. – I am a fairly recently divorced mother, I work from home, and I have two little girls that live with me.

I have a pretty hectic life. Their father recently cheated on me with a younger, thinner model – an affair that had been going on for over a year before I caught him.

There’s no reason for me to go into too many details. Ill say this – it was a very messy breakup, and was extremely draining on me emotionally and spiritually as we had been together for over a decade. The effect of the split was long lasting, and I sunk into depression in the following months. There were nights where I would literally make dinner, then go to bed and cry until I managed to fall asleep.

It was not a good time for me. I was at an extremely low point in my life.

Such a low point that I had very little motivation to do ANYTHING. I began to pack on a lot of weight, felt as unhealthy as I looked, and seemed to be drained of most my energy. I was barely living. I just shuffled my feet through my day, doing the bare minimum required.

I had to reclaim my life; to make a change. I needed to be a better mom and a better person. I needed to get my old self back.

I turned to Google to try and find the answer. Through shuffling through people’s favorite workout programs and reviews, I heard of a popular program called the PiYo workout. I was enthused, and people gave it glowing opinions. – I had to give it a try.

Okay, Okay, enough with the sob story, I promise. That’s not what  you came here for. Today, I’m going to share my thoughts and opinions on the PiYo workout program and their fitness guide.

You’re probably like me, wondering if the PiYo workout is worth buying. Or maybe you’re trying to figure out what PiYo even is.

I’ll start off with the most important thing – the money. It is a lot of money for a workout guide after all, especially for a woman on a budget (like me). I paid $59.85 just the basic version, which in my opinion is a lot of money for a workout calendar. There’s also a deluxe version which is even more expensive at $119.70.

“Okay, so it’s pricey. But Tara, is it worth it?!

My verdict is that it is… but also isn’t. I’ll try to explain:

I was expecting a bit more than what I got. Some DVDs and pdfs with a few images… sure.

This seems pretty run-of-the-mill with workout guides, but as I looked more into it, I found that PiYo is pretty expensive when compared to other programs you can buy.

The information itself and the workouts are fine. Don’t get me wrong – I’m sure some people saw real success with it. But I was disappointed with the package for the price. Maybe I’m just frugal? But I try to be as smart with my money as I can.

I gave the workouts a try. I committed to the calendar and followed the schedule for 2 weeks, but overall I found it BORING and hard to stick to.

Maybe it was because the workouts weren’t anything new to me, or maybe I was just caught off guard from the beginning due to the price. But overall, I had very lack luster results.

That 2 weeks was enough for me. After that, I quit the program.

I gave it a solid, honest try. I followed the piyo dvds and workout schedule. But it didn’t excite me or motivate me enough to keep going. I had no desire to continue.

2 weeks early might seem like it’s a bit too early to quit… and that’s a fair judgement. But I’m sorry to say, PiYo I was not a fan.  

Naturally my PiYo Results are nothing to write home about. You can’t expect to transform your body with a workout you don’t even like after just 2 weeks. That’s a recipe for yo-yo results (snapping back to normal after an extreme program).

My best friend, Jessie, goes to the gym like it’s her job. I showed her and a few more of my girlfriends the program and they said it wasn’t anything special.

Jessie specifically said it’s a basic, cookie-cutter program they give out to anyone at the gym.

Do the PiYo Workouts Actually Work?

I’m sure if you liked the program and were to stick to the calendar, you might see great results with it.

I think, in my opinion, these workouts are for advanced people. People who already work out, are already fit, and are looking for something new to take it to the next level.

However, if you’re like me and need something more beginner friendly, and are a fan of getting as much value for your money as possible, I suggest you try out the new, alternative workout guide I’ve been following. www.bikinibodyworkouts.com

The PiYO Alternative I Use That Works For Me

I was a little disappointed at myself and at the PiYo guides, but more than that, I was SICK and TIRED of feeling fat and unhealthy! I wanted to find something that would work for me.

So, I went back to Google.

Crazily enough, I started to see other people giving similar reviews of the PiYo workouts. It’s just my luck that I didn’t see any negative reviews until AFTER I had bought it…

Still, one of those forums ended up being my saving grave. One of the people talking about their own bad experience shared with me their ideal alternative.

Through them, I learned about the bikini body workouts by Jen Ferruggia.


I wish I had found the Bikini Body workouts earlier because it’s WAY cheaper, AND it still comes with a diet/nutrition guide. So I’m getting both sides of the weight loss equation – the diet, and the workouts.

I’ve been following Jen’s guides for 3 weeks and I’m having fun. I’m having fun working out! If you knew me, you would know just how shocking that statement is. I learn everyday, I work up a sweat, and I eat food I enjoy eating.

I’m not going to say the PiYo workout is completely ineffective. I’m not here to bash them, and I’m sure you might find good results with it if you like it.

In all honesty I owe them a bit of thanks, since they led me to Jen’s workout through other people’s reviews.

Overally, I recommend the Bikini Body Workouts over the PiYo Workouts, but it’s up to you and your preference which guide you follow.

UPDATE: My Results So Far (Before and After – 4 Weeks)

Hey everyone. I thought I would do an update to show you my results with the PiYo Workouts so far.

It’s been 4 weeks and I’m already seeing VERY promising results.  I’ve even shocked myself with the results lol. The best part is the compliments from people I know – even my daughters are commenting on the transformation.

Since starting the 12 week bikini body challenge, I noticed changes both physically and mentally.

I have more energy than ever before, I feel more confident, and I keep checking myself out in the mirror… 🙂 I can’t help it! I”d forgotten how good I can look.

I see my cheek bones again!

I wake up early morning and I’m full of energy; ready to conquer the world. I don’t rely on coffee like I used to. I don’t feel brain fog in the middle of the day. I’m a new woman.

The best feeling is being able to be the mother my daughters NEED me to be. And they’re seeing mommy eat right and exercise every day – I’m starting to have an influence on them as well.

  1. Hi Amanda may I ask how much weight you lost doing the bikini body workouts? I am thinking of buying it but I have 30kg to lose, you think I can do this?

    1. Hey There Margarie,
      I lost a total of about 32lbs which is around 15kg. I highly recommend you get the program, as think your goal would be possible to reach, but it depends on you and how you can stick to the program. In my opinion, once the results start, it becomes very addictive.

    I just have one question about Jen’s program : is there a printable version of the workouts or is it all online ? I don’t have such a reliable internet connection and I’m afraid this could be an obstacle for following this program…

      Thanks for reading my review and I’m glad to hear that it helped. Yes, once you log into the members area of the bikini body workouts you can download all the guides. You get a total of 4 guides – the workouts guide, the nutrition guide, the booty blast guide, bikini body shopping list, and the supplement list.   3. Tara, many thanks for your review about PiYo. I was thinking to buy it. Thanks to you, I changed my mind and I am going to buy Bikini Body Workouts. I read the website of BBW and is it really neccesary to have the little equipment like a set of dumbbells, resistance bands and a box or a bench? Regards, Agnie

    1. I think so Agnie, I do the workouts at home and I have small dumbbells, a resistance band, and jump rope. That said, these are the bare minimum of gym equipment in my opinion.

  5. I’m a fan of Piyo Workout but do admit it is very expensive. It is good but you are right, the workouts are nothing new. At first I was excited to do the workouts but lost interest in it after the second week. Probably my own fault because I suffer from depression and find it hard to stay motivated.
    Just wanted to chime in and warn people to be careful of buying workout programs today. A lot of them are rehashing of cheaper programs, that are designed to make as much money as they can off you and then moving on (they see everything as a fad). Some of these people really don’t have your best interests in mind.

      Unfortunately, I think you’re very much right. A lot of these workouts just look at us as buyers rather than people trying to lose weight. That’s why I wrote this review; I truly think Jen is actually trying to help women out there. I hope you have better experiences in the future.

      I do the workouts at home and all I have are dumbbells, a resistance band, and jump rope. That’s all you really need to succeed with the Bikini Body Workouts, which is part of why I love them so much.

      1. Yes but not 100% it is pretty flexible.
      2. I do all my workouts at home. I can’t really afford to go to the gym and it is to far for me to travel.
      My tips for you – stay strong and don’t let you or anyone talk you out of it. The first few workouts might be tough but once you start seeing some results you become addicted. My whole life has changed and I love the new me! I actually love life, where before I never really had an interest or hobby.

    Due to you already did Jen’s workouts, maybe you can tell us if it’s kinda hard for the knees for people who have some troubles there? Just like an opinion, to know if you felt too much impact there?. I’d love to know that, summer is soooo close and would love to try it! Thanks!! 🙂

      I guess that would depend on how bad your knees are? I’ve never really had any trouble with my knees so I can’t really say but some of the exercises might give you a little trouble. If they do give you trouble you could swap them with something else that is similar and easier on your knees.

      No, I didn’t have that problem and sorry to hear if you are. I’m sure you will sort it out though. Did you get the email with your log in details? You need to log in to the members area with your details then you can download everything from there..All the videos and downloads are in there as well, just follow instructions on the members area home page and you should be good to go.
      If not, let me know and I will try help you more or you can email their support team and they will help you out. They’re really friendly so don’t hesitate to ask them questions if you need to..

      I would recommend you browse around this very website to see a few of the other reviews guest bloggers have given, but I think a lot of people here have actually switched to Jen’s Program since i wrote up this review 🙂 It is a really strong one and one of the most postively reviews, cheaper ones I’ve seen. I would suggest you just try it honestly, and if you have issues, come back and ask me questions. I would love to help in anyway I can.
